Obituary for Peter F Hunt
Peter Hunt passed away on March 18th, surrounded by his family and loving Cavalier King Charles spaniels, at his home in New Hope, PA.
Peter was known far and wide to a prodigious company of friends, painters, tennis pals, steamboaters, fellow dog walkers and anyone who ever waited on him behind a desk, at a table, or in a drive thru as a consummate gentleman.
Born in 1937 in Milngavie, Scotland, he grew up in Glasgow, briefly serving in the Royal Air Force. He graduated from The Glasgow School of Art and Manchester School of Art in the UK. He immigrated to America in 1967, landed in New York City, and met his future wife Maryanne Fragomen. They married in 1972, whereupon he swept her off to the World’s Fair Marina, to a houseboat in the shadow of Shea Stadium. Two sons followed, Colin and then Ian, and a move to New Jersey.
As a successful package designer he had a hand in many of the products we use everyday. But it was in his hobbies that were his passion. Peter spent decades lovingly rehabbing old English cars and built a steamboat from scratch. He was the progenitor of a long series of “inventions,” to varying degrees of success, which included the water bicycle and the collapsible dinghy. He was an avid tennis player and master of the two-handed forehand. A friend once noted that there are people who think outside the box, but Peter never knew there was a box.
In 1997 he became an American citizen, or in his words, a “yankee doodle dandy.”
After retiring, he and Maryanne moved to New Hope, PA where Peter became an indelible fixture of the Bucks County arts scene. His passion was representing the beauty of his adopted home in plein air oil paintings. In addition to teaching Plein Air Workshops he was very active in the local arts community, serving on the board of Artsbridge and the Shad Festival Scholarship Committee. At Artsbridge, he was a longtime member of the local plein air group the River Rats.

He is survived by his wife Maryanne Hunt, his sons and their families: Colin Hunt and wife Heather Currier Hunt of Brooklyn, NY, Ian Hunt and wife Yumi Hunt and his granddaughter Aki Hunt of Chalfont, PA, his brother Michael Hunt and family of Perth, Australia and his sister Wendy Hunt of Bridport, UK.
He is predeceased by his sister Pamela Ferrie of Eaglesfield, UK and his granddaughter Willa Hunt (daughter of Colin and Heather).
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Peter’s life at a future date. Arrangements through Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home in Lambertville, NJ.
