Obituary for Peggy Ann Bishop (Hampton)

Peggy Ann Hampton Bishop, 90, of Lambertville, NJ, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2020.

Peggy was born in Lambertville and was a lifelong city resident. She attended Lambertville Public School and High School. In 1949, Peggy married her sweetheart James A. Bishop, Jr. Together Peggy and Jim worked hard and raised a family. They were devoted to each other and to their children. With the help of family and friends, Jim built a dream home for Peggy on Cottage Hill. It became the gathering spot for family and friends on many happy occasions. Peggy and Jim spent many evenings sitting at the kitchen table, doing book work or just chatting and afterwards watching tv shows like the Waltons and Andy Griffith. They were truly one another’s best friend.

On April 1, 1969, Peggy and Jim purchased Mitchell’s Café on Church Street in Lambertville. It was their long held dream and is still operated by the Bishop family. Peggy and Jim worked side by side to build a successful business. As a young woman Peggy had worked at Ledger’s and Kline’s in Lambertville and at the Bishop family owned restaurant in New Hope. Peggy was a wonderful cook and baker. Some of her specialties were lasagna and fresh baked apple pie. She and Jim loved to dance. She enjoyed music, especially country. Some of her favorite singers were Micky Gilly, Ray Price and Frank Sinatra.

Peggy loved traveling with her husband and family. Among their many destinations were Florida, the Daytona 500, Disney World, San Francisco, Alaska, the Grand Canyon and the Jersey shore. Her favorite vacation spot was the Poconos. She and Jim had honeymooned there and went several times each year for their birthdays, anniversary, and on the way to their fishing cabin on Lake Ontario in New York.

Peggy’s beloved husband and best friend Jim passed away on January 1, 2018. They had been married for over 68 years. Peggy was the mother of the late Mary Bishop, the daughter of the late William and Catherine Bush Hampton and the sister of the late Olive Hampton Lear and Virginia Hampton Heller. She is survived by her children Bonnie L. Bishop and her partner Scott Gordon, Carol A. Bishop, James A. Bishop III and his partner Bethann Morgan and David P. Bishop, all of Lambertville; her nieces and nephews Kathy Leary, Karen Smith, James and Janie Voorhees, Charles and George Salevsky and Toni Partite. She was also predeceased by her daughter Carol’s long-time partner Glenn Wright.
