Obituary for Dominick John Bongiorno

Dominick J. Bongiorno, 96, of Toms River, NJ, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

Born and raised in the Roseville section of Newark, NJ, Dominick lived in West Caldwell and later Bradenton, FL, before coming to Lakewood in 1995. He was a printer for the Newark Evening News and later for the Newark Star Ledger before retiring in 1982. Dominick was active in his church and community life. At St. Rose of Lima Church in Newark he served as president of the Holy Name Society and was the Past Grand Knight of St. Rose of Lima Knights of Columbus Council 5184. At Leisure Village in Toms River, Dominick was the editor of the community newspaper “Leisure Times” and was active in the men’s club. He founded a community support organization for hearing impaired residents of Leisure Village. He was an avid golfer and a devoted NY Yankees fan. Dominick had a quick but gentle wit. He doted on his family and cherished his friends.

Dominick was the husband of the late Josephine Calguire Bongiorno, the father of the late John M. Bongiorno and the brother of the late Marie Scalera and Jospeh Bongiorno. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Barbara J. and Lloyd J. Newbaker of Stockton, NJ and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral mass will be offered on Saturday, April 27 at 10:30 am at St. Luke’s Church, 1674 Old Freehold Road, Toms River, NJ 08753. Committal will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River, NJ 08753.
