Obituary for Walter Raymond "Walt" Davis Jr.

Walter Raymond Davis, Jr., 82, of Stockton, New Jersey, died on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ, surrounded by his family.

Born in New York City, Walt was raised in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Montclair High School. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX with a degree in electrical engineering, was a member of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi and also served in the US Army Reserves. He moved to New York City and was hired as an electrical engineer by the City of New York. Simultaneously he worked his way through New York Law School and passed the bar in 1965. He launched his legal career with the law firm of Gebhardt and Kiefer in Clinton and moved to Lebanon, NJ. In 1967 he joined the staff of the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey serving in the Department of Institutions and Agencies. Walt then worked for 10 years as Counsel to the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark and Washington, DC where he served on the Federal Conference Board. He maintained a private law practice in Lebanon and eventually established an additional practice in Basking Ridge and then Bernardsville, NJ. Walt and his family moved to Stockton in 1992. Walt was a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Hunterdon County Bar Association, the Republican Club, the Son of St. David’s Welsh Club and the Bayhead Yacht Club, as well as a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, attending at St. Agnes Church in Stockton. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Walt treasured time with his family and friends, working on the farm and reading.


Walt was the son of the late Walter R. Davis, Sr. and Josephine Lobell Davis. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Lucille Hogan Davis; his children and their spouses Elizabeth “Lisa” Holland Engel of Stockton, NJ Walter R. Davis, III and his wife, Linda, of St. Claire, PA, Jonathan Rhys Davis and his wife Pamela of Califon, NJ Robert Clifford Davis and his wife Jennifer of Westfield, NJ, Sarah Margaret Hogan Davis and her fiancé Johan Picado of Stockton, NJ, Katherine Diana-May Davis Caldwell and her husband Jeffrey Caldwell of Los Angeles, CA and Brian Matthew Davis and his wife Regin of New York City; His grandchildren Tory, Gunnar, Ronan and Holland Engel, Walter R. Davis IV, Thomas Cotner, Jacob Cotner, Jonathan Davis II, Madison Davis, Robert Davis II, Lilah Jane Davis, August Caldwell and Owen Davis; his sister Mary Louise Brown and her husband Roy of New Orleans and his niece Jessica Ann Ritter and her husband Christopher also of New Orleans.

The memorial mass will be offered on Wednesday, March 15, at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08559.

In lieu of flowers and in view of church guidelines during Lent, memorial donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 13 N. Main Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
